Mathieu Abelli - Baritone
The French tenor Mathieu Abelli begun his vocal studies at the Paul Dukas Conservatory in Paris and went on to Salzburg's Mozarteum. He completed his studies with American mezzo-soprano Grace Bumbry.
He debuted as Arlechino in Don Giovanni (Vincenzo Righini) in Holland's Bel Canto Festival , and in 2005 was chosen by David Stern and Jay Benfeld to sing Belfiore in the Royaumont Foundation's production of la Finta Giardiniera (Mozart) He further collaborated with Maestro Stern appearing as Herr Vogelsang in Der Schauspieldirektor (Mozart) in Belgium and France.
Mathieu Abelli is a frequent guest of the ensemble Fuoco E Cenere and has toured extensively with the ensemble in the United States and France. An Arion recording of neapolitan songs Canta Napoli, directed by Jay Bernfeld was well received by critics. A recent recording of Marco da Gagliano's La Dafne, in which Abelli performed the role of the lovelorn Apollo, was awarded a prestigious Orfée d'Or in 2008.
At the invitation of Jordi Savall Abelli sang the role of Apollo in Monteverdi’s Orfeo in Milano and Bremen.
In 2006-2007, Mathieu Abelli sang the title role of the well loved operetta Le Chanteur de Mexico (Lopez) at Paris's Chatelet theatre.
In 2008 he performed Le Chanteur de Mexico at Lamalou-les-Bains Festival and also appeared with the orchestra of the Toulon Opera. He also toured in 2008 in Belgium in Luis Mariano’s répertoire (Cirque Royal Brussels, Forum de Liège, Queen Elisabeth Hall at Antwerp, Beaux-Arts Charleroi).
He appeared in Le Chanteur de Mexico with the operas of Avignon, Reims and Toulon and a new recording of Monteverdi’s Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda with Jay Bernfeld and Fuoco e Cenere, Fauré Requiem, Figaro in Barbiere di Sevilia, many concerts of popular music.
